Did you already know that TikTok is introducing a new 10-minute video for all users? This viral video app, known for its short and fast videos, may not be long in contention with long 10-minute videos.

This is a big change for the viral video app, and one that begs the question. Why does it happen?

Why Does TikTok Increase Video Length?

In a statement to TechCrunch, TikTok shared hope that the enhanced video limit, will “unleash more creative possibilities for our creators around the world.”

TikTok has been gradually increasing the video limit over the past few years. The first 15 seconds. Then a minute. Then three minutes. Now it has become ten minutes!

However, short-form videos are notoriously difficult to monetize.

While TikTok does have funds for people creating content, and a tip feature, but that doesn’t come close to the huge payout potential, like YouTube ads.

Which is a problem. In fact, this is what led to the fall of the Vine app that crashed in 2017. In the creator economy, no monetization means = no content.

There’s a big difference between how users find and consume content on TikTok and YouTube, and how users introduce the new feature of 10-minute videos.

What Does 10 Minute Video Mean for TikTok’s Future?

As we have discussed, initially TikTok wasn’t really made for long videos. But it only presents short and instant videos for viewers. However, this time TikTOk created a new feature to allow users to create videos of up to 10 minutes.

On the other hand, which is YouTube, they operate like search engines, and users are more likely to watch longer videos when they intentionally search for them.

However, TikTok is never afraid to innovate in order for something to work.
If TikTok manages to get it right, then this could open the door for content creators to share long-form videos across multiple channels, and for brands to choose their own ad spend.
